You can find out if Gears is installed on a particular computer, for example, public computers. Use any of the following methods to check for Gears.

  • Visit http://gears.google.com. The Gears webpage will clearly tell you whether Gears is installed on the computer you're using.
  • Click the Tools menu in your browser and see if Gears settings is listed in the menu. If it's listed, then Gears is installed.
  • Check the programs on your computer. Click the operating system you're using below to view instructions:
    • Windows XP or Vista
      1. Click the Start menu on your computer taskbar.
      2. Select Control Panel.
      3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs (on XP) or Programs and Features (on Vista).
      4. See if Google Gears is listed in the list of programs.

If you've installed Google Chrome as your browser, Gears is installed by default.

    • Mac OS X or Linux using Firefox
      1. Click the Tools menu.
      2. Select Extensions (Firefox 1) or Add-ons (Firefox 2 or later).
      3. See if Google Gears is listed in the list of programs.
    • Mac OS X using Safari

In Safari, click the Safari menu. If 'Google Gears Settings' isn't listed, then Gears isn't installed.

    • Windows Mobile

You can usually access the list of installed programs by selecting Remove Programs on the Settings page. If Google Gears isn't listed, then Gears isn't installed.
